Maitreya Buddha Overview

It is a 32 meter high statue near Diskit Monastery. It is said to be the future of Buddhism which will be taught and bring peace to humanity. Natives from the valley helped in the construction of this and the gold used in the statue was donated by the heads of other major monasteries around. The staute faces the Shyok River, overlooking the Pakistan border.

It represents 3 ideas: protection of the Diskit Village, promotion of world peace, & prevention of further war with Pakistan. The statue commands panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, providing a perfect backdrop for spiritual contemplation and reflection. It stands as a timeless reminder of the enduring legacy of Buddhism and its profound teachings on compassion and wisdom.

Thiksey Monastery

Thiksey Monastery

Lies on the way to Karzok, situated on a hilltop which oversees the breathtaking views of the Indus Valley and the Stok range. It was founded in 1433 AD by two people: Spon Palden Sherab and his master Jangsem Sherab Zang. It is the largest Gompa in central Ladakh. The monastery also has a 15 meter Maitreya Buddha, which is the tallest statue in all of Ladakh, covering a height of 2 stories of the building.

Tso Moriri Lake

It takes one hour from the village to reach the end of Tso Moriri lake. Can also spot black necked cranes. It is also the largest high altitude lake in all of Ladakh. Tso Moriri is less popular, making it one of the best off beat places to visit. It sits an altitude of 4592 meters above sea level in the Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve.

One of the most visited hot springs. It is a source of bath, drinking water and therapeutic purpose. It is a small village located near the Siachen Glacier. It is also the final frontier village to the Indo-Tibetan border.

It was constructed by the Indian Army to remember the martyrs of several Indo-Pak wars over the years. It is divided into 2 sections, Upper and lower floor. The upper floor showcases the various kinds of weapons used during the Kargil war. On the lower floor, we can find pictures taken during the war, which provides details and insights on how the Indian army fought the war. There is also a projector room which shows the documentary called ‘Operation Vijay’.

It takes half an hour to reach the Stok Monastery. You can spot the mountains from the main market, a very contrasting image. From jewellery to clothing, groceries to the local food market, Leh Market has it all. It is divided into small paths and streets, sections allocated to clothes, spices, food and handicrafts.

You can see a 22 meter high sitting Buddha Statue which is also visible from the Villa stay. There is also a big lamp which will be lit during ceremonies. The Monastery also has a cafe on its terrace overlooking the amazing views of the mountains. This once used to be a royal residence.

It lies on the Leh-Kargil-Srinagar National Highway. It is marked with by a yellow signboard which reads “The Phenomenon that Defines Gravity”. Vehicles began to move forward at a speed of 20Km/Hr. The local folklore says that the Magnetic Hill is served as a stairway to heaven. Those who were worthy were pulled towards it while the others failed to make the ascent.
