Netravathi Peak Trek, Chikmagalur
The Netravati Trek is a popular trek when it comes to the South Indian trekking circles. It is located in the Chikmagalur district between Samse and Beltangadi, at a distance of 330 km from Bangalore. Its named after the river Netravati which originates from the Bangrabalige Valley, Yelaneeru Ghat in Kudremukh.
There are many legendary narrations to the birth of the river Netravati. In one of the tales, it is believed that the Almighty who incarnated as Varaha Avatar in the Dasavatharam protected the land immersed in floods by raising it and relieved by this the ground in a state of bliss shed happy tears which is considered as the birth of Netravati. According to the localites of this place, the river was first discovered by the sages in the famous pilgrimage place Dharmasthala where they came to collect some holy water as the river flows through this place and is considered very sacred among the Indian rivers. Also the Bandaje falls here is formed by the tributary of the river Netravati.
This trek offers excellent views of rolling Shola grasslands on all sides and a bird’s eye view of the Beltangadi town. Netravati Peak is a lesser-known yet beautiful trek located in the Kudremukh Forest range, and the 12-km trek calls for a lot of adventure and excitement. The Netravathi trek has recently gained a good amount of recognition. The Netravati peak is 1250 metres high is a part of the Western Ghats range. The Netravati trek is nothing short of a paradise. The clouds seem to be playing hide and seek with the beautiful rolling hills. Hikers will get to see the Kudremukh Peak on the right and the Rani Jhari towards the left in case the clouds are clear. During monsoons, the shape and pattern of the clouds at Netravati keep changing almost very frequently. Netravati is probably one of the best places in Karnataka to exclusively view and enjoy the clouds. Hikers have to trek through the Shola forests that are filled with various species of flora and fauna. Along the way, one will encounter two water streams, numerous waterfalls(season-dependent), dense forests, vast grasslands, the melodious songs of the birds, and the bubbling streams that unfold before the eyes.
There are 3 main segments in the Netravati trail. The first segment emerges at the base and will traverse through two-tire waterfalls and a dense forest section until the sound of the river Netravati is heard. The first segment concludes here and in the second segment the hikers will follow the Netravati River to the grasslands leading to an open space. From here, the hikers will have to cross some false peaks and steep that brings about a feeling that they’ve already reached the Netravati peak, before they reach the actual peak. At this point, the entire panorama is breathtaking.
The best time for Netravati Peak trek is from June to February. During the monsoons, one can enjoy the abundant greenery of the Kudremukh region. During summer the trek offers clearer views when the landscape is a mixture of brown and green. Post-monsoon or winters are thus the best seasons for Netravati trekking.
