Hemis Monastery Overview

A 400-year-old monastery located within the park. It is the largest monastic institution in Ladakh. The monastery also offers rooms to stay. Over a 1000 monks live here with over 200 branches. This is also the wealthiest monastery in India and is famous for its unique and antique collections like the statue of Buddha made out of Copper, Stupas made out of gold and silver.

The Tibetan style architecture can be seen all over the monastery. The architecture of Hemis Monastery is another captivating aspect, characterized by its traditional Tibetan style with colorful murals, intricate wood carvings, and ornate decorations adorning the walls and interiors. The main assembly hall, known as Dukhang, houses a massive statue of Guru Padmasambhava, along with other deities and religious artefacts.
