Overview

Goa Gajah, also known as the Elephant Cave, is a significant archaeological site and spiritual sanctuary located near Ubud. The cave, dating back to the 9th century, features an intricately carved entrance depicting menacing faces and creatures, believed to ward off evil spirits. Inside the cave, visitors will find rock-cut shrines, lingam and yoni (symbols of Shiva and Parvati), and a small worship area. The surrounding grounds are equally enchanting, with ancient bathing pools, stone carvings, and a lush garden filled with tropical plants and towering trees. Goa Gajah is not just a historical site but also a place of meditation and reflection, offering a serene escape into Bali’s rich spiritual heritage. Visitors should dress modestly and respect the sanctity of this ancient site.
