Overview

Pura Tirta Empul, nestled in the lush village of Manukaya near Tampaksiring, is a sacred Hindu water temple revered for its holy spring water, believed to have healing properties. Dating back to 960 AD during the Warmadewa dynasty, the temple complex is steeped in history and mythology. The central courtyard features a large rectangular purification pool fed by 12 fountains, where devotees perform a ritual bathing known as “melukat” to cleanse themselves spiritually. Each fountain is believed to have unique healing powers, and the ritual involves praying, immersing oneself in the water, and following a specific sequence of ablutions. The temple’s name, Tirta Empul, translates to “holy water spring,” reflecting its spiritual significance. Beyond the purification pool, visitors can explore the intricately carved shrines, pavilions, and statues that adorn the temple grounds. The serene atmosphere, combined with the sound of flowing water and the scent of incense, creates a deeply meditative experience. Pura Tirta Empul is a profound embodiment of Bali’s rich cultural and religious heritage, offering visitors a chance to partake in ancient rituals and connect with the island’s spiritual essence.
