Zorawar Fort Overview

It was built in the 1830’s when the Dogras and Sikhs took control over the region. The fort is made up of clay, sun-dried bricks, stones and wooden frames. Zorawar Fort is in proximity to the Chenab River and is a major attraction for nature lovers, history buffs as well as archeologists. The best time to visit is between May to September. Zorawar Fort has a museum that holds the treasures of the Zorwar Singh plus coins.

There is also a sculpture of General Zorawar Singh. The architecture of Zorawar Fort reflects the traditional style of Himalayan forts, with thick stone walls, sturdy ramparts, and watchtowers that once housed cannons and artillery. The fort's strategic location allowed it to control access to the town of Leh and the vital trade routes that passed through the region, including the ancient Silk Route.
