The place where the umbrellas are in fashion throughout the year! Known as the wettest land in India, it holds the highest record of rainfall every year.
It also is home to the vertical rivers A.K.A waterfalls. Nohkilikai, Dainthlen and the Seven Sisters falls. These waterfalls do not just come down as thick curtains but also carry legends. These stories happen to be mind blowing! In the beautiful Cherrapunji they don’t build bridges, they grow it. Yes! The living root bridge, as unique as it sounds, is made out of aerial roots of rubber fig trees. It’s a double decker bridge in the Nongriat Village. It has caves too! The Mawsmai cave is a natural limestone cave with its impressive formations.
Cherrapunji is a place where fog is less of a weather condition and more of a resident. It’s like living in a cloud – quite literally. Forget seeing the horizon; most of the time, you’ll be lucky if you can see your own hand in front of your face. Perfect for those who enjoy a bit of mystery in their daily commute.
Here’s the twist: despite being one of the wettest places on Earth, Cherrapunji sometimes faces water shortages. It’s like a cosmic joke where the town that gets all the rain can’t always keep it. The rainwater doesn’t stick around long enough to hang out – it’s got places to be, like rushing down cliffs and into rivers.
For those with adventurous taste buds, Khasi cuisine is a delight. Ever tried jadoh (spiced rice and meat)? How about dohneiiong (pork with black sesame)? It’s a gastronomic roller coaster!
When visiting Cherrapunji, think of your suitcase as a Swiss Army knife. You’ll need layers, waterproof everything, and probably a few extra pairs of socks. Consider it preparation for experiencing all four seasons in a single day, with a heavy emphasis on rain.
