The Nohkalikai Falls is situated in the East Khasi Hills in Cherrapunji. Cherrapunji is known as the wettest land, Its where the Highest Rainfall is recorded every year! It almost rains throughout the year there.
Nohkalikai is the India’s tallest Plunge waterfall (If youre wondering what a plunge waterfall is, it is when the waterfall is not in contact with the rock which it flows over, almost a free falling waterfall) at the height of 340 meters. It originates from the water collected when the rainwater collected on the summit of the plateau.
The name of the falls Nohkalikai means “ Jump of Likai” in Khasi. This comes from a legend that happens in the village when Likai, a single mother who remarries a man who wasn’t happy with the fact that the marriage came with a baby. He one day, waited for her to leave to work, out of jealousy kills the baby and cooks it. Tragically, he serves Likai the meat of her own child. After discovering the gruesome truth, she throws herself off the cliff.
