The Gokarna Beach Trek is a 2-day, 1-night coastal trek from Bangalore covering 7 km along the Karnataka coastline — from Belekan Beach through Paradise Beach, Half Moon Beach, and ending at Om Beach. The trail runs through a combination of open sandy beach, shaded forest paths, and rocky coastal ridges, with the Arabian Sea visible for most of the route.
Unlike a typical beach holiday, the Gokarna Beach Trek is an active trail with terrain changes, elevation on the rocky sections, and a genuine sense of arrival at each beach. You are not driving between beaches — you are walking between them, which is a completely different experience.
Most beach getaways from Bangalore involve a long drive to a single beach, an afternoon in the water, and the drive back. Gokarna Beach Trek strings five beaches together on foot — Belekan, Paradise, Half Moon, Om, and Kudle — each with its own character and a short but real trail section connecting them. Add overnight coastal camping, a Sharavati backwater boat ride, and Jog Falls on the return leg, and it becomes one of the most complete weekend escapes from Bangalore on any budget.

The Gokarna Beach Trek is rated Easy to Moderate — the most beginner-friendly trek in the Backpackers United catalogue. The 7 km trail has no steep mountain climbs and no forest permits required. The terrain alternates between flat sandy beach, shaded forest paths, and short rocky ridge sections between beaches that require careful footing but no technical skill.
Suitable for: First-time trekkers, beginners, solo travellers, couples, families with older children
Not recommended for: People with serious mobility issues or those unable to walk 5–7 km
Fitness benchmark: If you can walk 5 km comfortably, you will complete the Gokarna Beach Trek without difficulty.
Gokarna is approximately 487 km from Bangalore — around 9 hours by road via NH66 (old NH17) through Udupi and Kumta. Our package includes round-trip non-AC transportation from four Bangalore pickup points: Indiranagar, Domlur, Yeshwantpur, and Gorguntepalya. The overnight vehicle reaches Gokarna by early morning, giving you a full day for the trek and coastal exploration.
Independent travel: Take NH66 from Bangalore towards Mangalore, continue to Kumta, and take the turnoff towards Gokarna. Gokarna town is well connected by road and rail. The nearest major station is Kumta (30 km) and Gokarna Road railway station is 9 km from town.
Belekan Beach: The trek starting point — a quiet, largely undiscovered beach with a wide sandy stretch and calm water. This is where your coastal walk begins.
Paradise Beach: Accessible only on foot — the most secluded of the five beaches. No road access, no vendors, just sand, rock, and sea. The walk from Belekan to Paradise is the first major terrain shift.
Half Moon Beach: Named for its distinctive crescent shape. A short rocky climb separates Half Moon from Paradise — one of the most photogenic sections of the route.
Om Beach: The finishing point of the trek — a wide beach shaped like the Om symbol, with cafés, shacks, and open water. Spend free time here before evening camp.
Kudle Beach: The calmer, more relaxed beach north of Om — worth a short walk from the campsite.
The return to Bangalore on Day 2 is not just a drive back. Two significant stops are included:
Sharavati Backwaters (Honnavar): A scenic boat ride through the Sharavati River estuary — mangrove channels, calm water, and a completely different landscape from the previous day's coast.
Jog Falls: At 830 ft (253 m), Jog Falls is India's tallest plunge waterfall — four distinct streams dropping off the Western Ghats plateau. The return journey passes directly through this area and the stop is included.

Paradise to Half Moon Beach (~1.5 km, 45 minutes): Rocky coastal ridge section — the most photographed part of the trek with the Arabian Sea on one side and green hills on the other
Half Moon to Om Beach (~2 km, 1 hour): Descend to the crescent-shaped Half Moon Beach, short rest, then continue along the coast to Om Beach
Om Beach (End): Free time — explore the beach, eat at a café (self-sponsored), swim, and take in the Om-shaped coastline before the group assembles

Sharavati Backwaters – Honnavar: A scenic boat ride through the Sharavati River estuary — mangrove channels, calm water, and a quiet natural landscape completely different from the previous day. One of the most underrated experiences on this route.
Jog Falls: India's tallest plunge waterfall at 830 ft (253 m) — four distinct streams dropping off the edge of the Western Ghats plateau. The viewpoint gives a full frontal view of all four falls. Entry fee applicable (self-sponsored).

Note: Drop points are the same as pickup locations. Travel time on Day 2 is long — plan your Day 3 morning accordingly.
The Gokarna Beach Trek is a coastal route and the experience shifts significantly with the season — the sea conditions, trail quality, and overall comfort all change. Here is what each season looks like.
Best Conditions
The best time for Gokarna Beach Trek. October to December brings post-monsoon clarity — green coastal hills, calm seas, and perfect trekking temperatures. January to March is warm and dry with the clearest skies of the year. The beach trail is firm, the sea is swimmable at Om Beach, and the Sharavati Backwaters are at their most scenic. This is when the trek is at its best.
Heavy Rain – Trek Not Recommended
Gokarna receives heavy coastal monsoon rainfall from June to September. The beach trail becomes slippery, rocky sections are dangerous when wet, sea conditions are rough and unsafe for swimming, and camping is not possible. Jog Falls is spectacular during monsoon but the beach trek itself is not operated in this season.
Hot & Humid – Not Ideal
April and May are hot and humid on the Karnataka coast. Temperatures on the exposed beach and rocky sections can climb significantly by mid-morning. The trek is still operable but physically demanding in the heat. If these are your only available months, start the trek very early and carry extra water.
October to March is the clear window for this trek. November and December offer the best all-round conditions — post-monsoon freshness, calm seas, and comfortable trekking temperatures throughout the day.
The Gokarna Beach Trek is not a resort beach holiday — it is an active coastal trail connecting five beaches on foot, with the Arabian Sea as your constant backdrop. The terrain shifts between flat sand, shaded forest paths, and short rocky ridge sections, and each beach has a completely different character. Expect a relaxed pace, genuinely beautiful coastal scenery, and the satisfaction of arriving at Paradise Beach knowing that the only way in was on foot.
One night in twin-sharing tents set up near the Gokarna coast. Tents are pitched on firm ground with basic facilities. It is proper camping — not glamping — with a campfire in the evening, the sound of the sea nearby, and a genuinely open-sky night. Sleeping bags and mats are arranged. This is the right way to sleep in Gokarna.
Every Gokarna batch is led by certified Backpackers United trek leads — including female trek leads on all batches. Local guides with knowledge of the coastal trail accompany the group throughout. Safety protocols are followed at all water points and rocky sections. You focus on the beaches; the team handles the logistics.
Valid Photo ID: Carry a hard copy of a government-issued photo ID — Aadhaar, driving licence, or passport. Required for group records and any entry point checks. A soft copy alone is not sufficient.
Footwear: Carry two pairs — proper trekking shoes or sturdy trail runners for the rocky ridge sections between beaches, and floaters or flip flops for walking on sand and at Om Beach. You will use both.
Backpack: A 20–30 litre daypack is ideal. Avoid large suitcases — you will be trekking 7 km on a coastal trail and need both hands free. Use a waterproof liner or rain cover as coastal humidity and sea spray can wet your bag.
Water: Carry a minimum of 2 litres. The beach trek has no water points between Belekan and Om Beach and the exposed sections get hot even in winter. Dehydration is the most common issue on this trail.
Clothing: Light, breathable, full-sleeved t-shirts for sun protection on the exposed coastal sections. Shorts are fine for the beach sections. Carry one spare set of clothes for the campsite evening and one dry set for the return journey.
Rain Gear: Even outside monsoon, a light poncho is worth carrying. Sea winds can bring sudden showers any time of year on the Karnataka coast.
Sunscreen: The beach and rocky ridge sections have zero shade for extended stretches. SPF 50 sunscreen is strongly recommended. Reapply after any water exposure.
Snacks & Energy: Carry energy bars, dry fruits, or biscuits for the trail. Lunch on Day 1 at Om Beach is self-sponsored — there are plenty of cafés and shacks to choose from. Pack snacks for the rocky sections where there are no stops.
Headlamp: The group departs Bangalore overnight and the campsite activities extend into the evening. A headlamp with spare batteries is useful both for the early arrival and for navigating around camp after dark.
Power Bank: There are no charging facilities on the beach or at the campsite. Carry a fully charged power bank — a full day of beach photography will drain your phone significantly.
Towel & Swimwear: You will want to swim at Om Beach. Pack a quick-dry towel and swimwear. A cotton towel takes too long to dry in the coastal humidity.
Personal Medications: Carry any prescription medicine you take regularly. Seasickness tablets are recommended if you are prone to motion sickness on long drives. Basic pain relief and blister plasters are also useful.
Cash: Carry enough cash for Day 1 lunch at Om Beach, any personal shopping in Gokarna town, Jog Falls entry, and return journey meals. Card payments are not reliable in remote coastal areas.
What NOT to Carry:
• Single-use plastic — Gokarna beaches are protected coastal areas, no plastic on the trail
• Alcohol — not permitted during the trek
• Jewellery or valuables
• Large suitcases or trolley bags
• Uncomfortable footwear without grip for the rocky sections
• Anything not essential — you are carrying this for 7 km on a warm coastal trail
