Overview

Kudremukh Trek from Bangalore – Distance, Difficulty, Itinerary & Booking Guide

Kudremukh Trek from Bangalore is a 2-day trekking experience covering 22 km through the protected forests of Kudremukh National Park in Chikmagalur, Karnataka. Standing at 6,214 ft (1,894 m), Kudremukh Peak is the third highest peak in Karnataka and is widely regarded as one of the most scenic treks in South India. The trek takes you through dense shola forests, open rolling grasslands, multiple freshwater stream crossings, and a long ridge walk leading to a panoramic summit above the clouds.

Unlike most treks near Bangalore, Kudremukh is located inside a UNESCO World Heritage designated zone with a strictly controlled daily permit system. This keeps the trail significantly less crowded than popular alternatives, making it a premium trekking experience even on weekends.

What Makes Kudremukh Trek Different

Most treks near Bangalore offer either forest trails or grassland views — Kudremukh delivers both in one route. The trail changes character every few kilometres: dense canopy forest in the first section gives way to wide open shola grasslands beyond Ontimara, and the final ridge walk to the summit offers 360° panoramic views of the Western Ghats and deep valleys stretching across Karnataka.

The forest permit system limits daily trekker entries, which means you are sharing the trail with fewer people than on comparable treks. This is rare for a trek within 8 hours of Bangalore.

Difficulty and Who Can Trek

Kudremukh is classified as a moderate trek. The trail is not technical — there are no rope sections or scrambles — but the 22 km total distance and long trekking hours require decent stamina and a comfortable pace.

Suitable for: Fit beginners, intermediate and experienced trekkers.

Not recommended for: First-time trekkers with no prior walking experience, people with knee injuries, or anyone with serious cardiovascular conditions.

A reasonable benchmark: if you can walk 8–10 km comfortably on flat ground, you can complete Kudremukh with proper pacing and the support of our trek leader.

Permits and Forest Access

Kudremukh National Park issues a fixed number of trekking permits every day through the Karnataka Forest Department. No permit means no entry at the forest checkpost — there are no on-the-spot permits.

Your forest entry permit is fully included in the package and pre-arranged by our team. You only need to carry a valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, Passport, or Driving Licence) for verification at the checkpost. A certified local guide — mandatory under forest regulations — is also arranged and included.

Slots fill quickly on weekends and during October to December. We recommend booking at least 7–10 days in advance.

How to Reach Kudremukh from Bangalore

Kudremukh is approximately 330 km from Bangalore, around 7–8 hours by road via NH75. Our package includes round-trip non-AC transportation from four pickup points in Bangalore — Indiranagar, Domlur, Yeshwantpur, and Gorguntepalya. The overnight bus reaches Kudremukh early morning, giving you a full day for the trek.

For those travelling independently: take NH75 from Bangalore towards Mangalore, exit at Sakleshpur, and continue towards Kalasa and Kudremukh village. The last 30 km is a winding ghat road — a 4-wheel drive or high-clearance vehicle is recommended.

Wildlife and Nature

Kudremukh National Park is one of the most biodiverse protected areas in India. The shola grassland ecosystem supports species found nowhere else on earth. During the trek you are likely to encounter:

Indian Gaur (bison) on the grassland sections

Malabar giant squirrel in the forest canopy

Wide variety of endemic birds including the Malabar whistling thrush

Rare orchids, mosses, and ferns along the stream crossings

Leeches during monsoon season — salt or leech-proof socks recommended

The park is also home to tigers, leopards, and sloth bears, though sightings on the trek route are extremely rare.

Kudremukh Trek vs Other Treks Near Bangalore

Kudremukh is often compared with other popular Karnataka treks. Here is how it differs:

Kumara Parvatha (Pushpagiri): Higher altitude, more technical, but no rolling grasslands. Better for serious trekkers seeking a harder challenge.

Kodachadri: Similar distance, also requires forest permits, more accessible from Shimoga. Slightly less scenic grassland coverage than Kudremukh.

Tadiandamol: Shorter, easier, no permits required. Better for first-timers. Located in Coorg.

Netravati Peak: Inside the same Kudremukh forest range, shorter route, easier grade — a good stepping stone before attempting Kudremukh.

Kudremukh is the right choice if you want the full Western Ghats experience — forest, grassland, ridge, summit — in one trail.

Trail Guide

Trek Route Breakdown

The Kudremukh Trek follows a single out-and-back trail starting from the Kudremukh Forest Check Post near Mulodi village. The trail passes through three distinct zones — dense shola forest, open grasslands, and a final ridge climb to the summit. Total distance is 22 km round trip.

Forest Check Post to Ontimara

6 Kms 3 hours

The trek begins at the Kudremukh Forest Check Post where permits are verified. The trail enters dense shola forest immediately — expect tall canopy, stream crossings, and a gradual climb. Ontimara is a large solitary tree and the most prominent landmark on the trail. It is a common rest stop and the point where the forest opens into grasslands.

Ontimara to ridge

2.5 kms 1 - 1.5 hours

Beyond Ontimara, the trail climbs steadily through open grasslands. The landscape changes dramatically here — you can see the ridgeline of the Western Ghats stretching in both directions. This section is exposed to wind and sun, so pace yourself and stay hydrated.

Ridge to Kudremukh Peak

2.5 kms 1.5 - 2 hrs

The final stretch is the steepest part of the trek. The trail narrows and climbs sharply to the summit at 6,214 ft. On a clear day, the 360° panoramic view from the top covers endless rolling hills and distant valleys. Allow 20–30 minutes at the summit before beginning your descent on the same trail.

The highlight of the trek is reaching the summit, where you can witness panoramic views of endless green hills and valleys. The trek is physically demanding due to its 22 km distance, but the gradual elevation makes it manageable for fit beginners.

Stay will be arranged in a comfortable homestay on a dormitory or sharing basis, depending on availability. Basic facilities will be provided to ensure a safe and pleasant stay.

Backpackers United Team

Our experienced trek leaders and local guides will accompany you throughout the trek to ensure safety, guidance, and a smooth overall experience.

Pack List

Things to Carry

Documents & ID Carry a hard copy of a government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, driving licence, or passport). The forest department checks ID at the checkpoint before issuing permits. A soft copy on your phone is not accepted.

Backpack A 20–30 litre daypack is ideal. Avoid large trolley bags or suitcases — you will be trekking 22 km and need both hands free. Use a rain cover or waterproof bag liner.

Trekking Shoes Proper trekking shoes with ankle support and good grip are mandatory. The trail has multiple stream crossings and muddy sections. Sandals or casual sneakers are not suitable.

Clothing Wear full-sleeved t-shirts and full-length track pants. The trail has thorns, insects, and direct sun on the ridge sections. Carry one extra set of clothes for the homestay overnight stay.

Rain Gear A lightweight poncho or waterproof jacket is essential, even outside monsoon season. The Western Ghats weather changes quickly and rain can start without warning at any time of year.

Water Bottles Carry a minimum of 2 litres of water. There are freshwater streams on the trail where you can refill, but do not rely solely on this. Stay hydrated — dehydration is the most common reason people abandon the trek midway.

Snacks & Energy Carry juice packs, energy bars, dry fruits, or glucose biscuits for the trail. Packed lunch is provided as part of your Backpackers United package, but snacks between meals keep your energy levels stable on the long climb.

Head Torch The trek starts before dawn and the forest can be dark. A head torch or torch with spare batteries is essential. Phone flashlights drain battery fast — bring a dedicated torch.

Power Bank There is no charging facility on the trail or at the base. Carry a fully charged power bank to keep your phone alive for navigation, photos, and emergencies.

Personal Medication Carry any prescription medication you take regularly. Also recommended: basic pain relief, ORS sachets for dehydration, and blister plasters. A minor blister on a 22 km trek can become a serious problem without a plaster.

Sunscreen & Lip Balm The ridge section has no tree cover and direct sun exposure for 1–2 hours. SPF 50 sunscreen is strongly recommended.

What NOT to carry

Alcohol — strictly prohibited inside Kudremukh National Park

Single-use plastic — not permitted on the trail

Sharp objects, blades, or lighters

Jewellery or valuables

Large suitcases or trolley bags

Uncomfortable footwear (heels, sandals, flip flops)
