Netravati Peak Trek from Bangalore is a 2-day trekking experience through the Kudremukh Forest Range in Chikmagalur, Karnataka. The peak stands at 1,250 m (4,101 ft) and is located between the Samse tea estate zone and the Beltangadi region — approximately 330 km from Bangalore. The trek covers around 12 km through dense shola forests, open grasslands, and seasonal stream crossings, finishing at a panoramic summit with views of Kudremukh Peak and Rani Jhari valley on a clear day.
Named after the sacred Netravati River — which originates from the Bangrabalige Valley near the Yelaneeru Ghat in the Kudremukh range — this trek carries both natural beauty and deep cultural significance. It operates inside the same protected forest range as Kudremukh National Park, with a daily permit system that keeps the trail genuinely uncrowded even on weekends.
Most treks from Bangalore offer either forest trails or open summit views — Netravati Peak Trek delivers both in one shorter, more manageable route. The trail passes through three distinct terrain types: dense shola forest at the base, open rolling grasslands in the middle section, and a final ridge climb to the summit offering panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see Kudremukh Peak to the right and Rani Jhari valley to the left — a view that consistently surprises trekkers given the trail's moderate difficulty.
The route also passes seasonal waterfalls on the Bandaje stream — a tributary of the Netravati River — which run at full force during and after the monsoon. During monsoon months, clouds roll across the ridgeline creating a constantly shifting landscape that Netravati Peak is known for among regular Western Ghats trekkers.

Netravati Peak Trek is classified as easy to moderate. The trail is shorter than Kudremukh (12 km vs 22 km) and the elevation gain is more gradual, making it genuinely suitable for first-time trekkers with basic fitness. There are a few false peaks and short steep sections near the summit — these add some challenge but require no technical climbing or prior trekking experience.
Suitable for: First-time trekkers, fit beginners, and intermediate trekkers looking for a rewarding Western Ghats experience without the full commitment of a longer trail.
Not recommended for: People with serious knee injuries, cardiovascular conditions, or anyone who cannot comfortably walk 5–6 km on flat ground.
The trek is named after the Netravati River, one of Karnataka's most sacred rivers. It originates from the Bangrabalige Valley near the Yelaneeru Ghat in the Kudremukh range and flows through the famous pilgrimage town of Dharmasthala before reaching the Arabian Sea near Mangalore. Local legend connects the river's birth to the Varaha Avatar of Lord Vishnu — one of the Dasavatharam — making the Netravati a river of both ecological and spiritual significance. Trekking in the river's source region adds a layer of cultural depth that few hill treks in South India can match.
Netravati Peak Trek passes through one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in India. During the trek you are likely to encounter:
Indian Gaur (bison) on the open grassland sections
Malabar giant squirrel in the shola forest canopy
Endemic birds including the Malabar whistling thrush, jungle fowl, and Malabar grey hornbill
Seasonal orchids, ferns, and mosses along the forest stream crossings
Leeches during the monsoon — carry salt or wear leech-proof socks
The Kudremukh Forest Range is also home to tigers and leopards, though sightings on the trek route are extremely rare.
Netravati Peak Trek is often considered a stepping stone before Kudremukh. Here is how it compares:
Kudremukh Trek: 22 km, 6,214 ft — harder and longer but in the same forest range. A good next step after Netravati.
Tadiandamol Trek: Similar difficulty and duration, no permits required. Located in Coorg, different landscape.
Kodachadri Trek: Comparable permit requirement and forest experience, based out of Shimoga. Slightly different terrain.
Kumara Parvatha: Much longer and more strenuous. Best for experienced trekkers only.
Netravati Peak is the right choice if you want a genuine Western Ghats forest experience — shola forest, grasslands, summit views — in a manageable 12 km route with fewer crowds.

Netravati Peak Trek is open throughout most of the year, with October to February being the best window for clear summit views, dry trails, and comfortable temperatures. The monsoon months — June to September — bring the forest to life with intense greenery and seasonal waterfalls on the Bandaje stream, but trails are slippery and leeches are active. March to May is best avoided as summer heat makes the forest walk uncomfortable.
Recommended
Clear skies, cool temperatures between 12–22°C, and dry trails make this the best time for Netravati Peak Trek. Summit views of Kudremukh Peak and Rani Jhari are sharpest in this window. Book at least 5–7 days in advance on weekends.
Monsoon
The Kudremukh forest turns a vivid green and waterfalls including Bandaje cascade run at full force. The cloud display from the summit is dramatic and constantly shifting. Trails are slippery and leeches are active — carry salt and wear leech-proof socks. Recommended for trekkers with prior experience and proper rain gear.
Summer
The forest is hot and dry during summer, and the open grassland sections have no shade cover. Water sources on the trail reduce significantly. The trek is accessible but the overall experience is far less rewarding than the post-monsoon or winter window.
October to February is the best time for Netravati Peak Trek — clear skies, dry trails, and sharp panoramic views of Kudremukh Peak and Rani Jhari from the summit. June to September is ideal if you love monsoon greenery and cascading waterfalls, though trails get slippery and leeches are common. Avoid March to May — summer heat and dry grasslands reduce the trek experience significantly.
Netravati Peak Trek delivers a complete Western Ghats forest experience — shola canopy, open grassland ridges, stream crossings, and a summit with sweeping views of the Kudremukh range. The trail is well-paced and rewarding, manageable for fit beginners while satisfying for regular trekkers. Limited batch sizes ensure the forest stays uncrowded and the experience stays personal.
You stay one night at a local homestay 1 km before the Kudremukh checkpost — the last stop before the forest begins. Rooms are in dormitory or sharing arrangement based on availability. Meals are home-cooked, hot, and filling. It is a genuine homestay experience that fits the spirit of the trek perfectly.
Each batch is led by one certified trek leader with valid forest department permits for the Kudremukh zone. Groups are capped at 10 trekkers per batch — kept intentionally small so every person gets proper attention on the trail. First aid is carried on all treks. Permits, meals, and logistics are fully managed so you can stay focused on the trek.
Protected forest reserves here operate on a strict slot-based entry system. Every trekker must carry a valid permit issued through the Aranya Vihara portal before the checkpost.
Permit

Certified Guide
Mandatory & Arranged
Your forest entry permit is pre-arranged and fully included — no separate booking needed on your end.
Permits are issued by the Karnataka Forest Department through the official Aranya Vihara portal.
Carry a valid government-issued photo ID on trek day — Aadhaar, passport, or driving licence.
Your assigned guide will hold the group permit and present it at the forest checkpost on arrival.
Daily entry slots are strictly limited; confirming your booking locks in your permit slot automatically.
Your permit is sorted. Just keep a valid photo ID handy on trek day. Prefer to arrange your own? Follow our step-by-step guide.
Documents & ID — Carry a hard copy of a government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, driving licence, or passport). The forest department checks ID at the checkpost before issuing permits. A soft copy on your phone is not accepted.
Backpack — A 20–30 litre daypack is ideal. Avoid large trolley bags — you will be trekking 12 km and need both hands free. Use a rain cover or waterproof bag liner.
Trekking Shoes — Proper trekking shoes with ankle support and good grip are essential. The trail has stream crossings and muddy sections. Sandals or casual sneakers are not suitable.
Clothing — Wear full-sleeved t-shirts and full-length track pants. The trail has thorns, insects, and direct sun on the grassland and ridge sections. Carry one extra set of clothes for the homestay overnight.
Rain Gear — A lightweight poncho or waterproof jacket is essential regardless of season. Western Ghats weather changes quickly — rain can start without warning at any time of year.
Water Bottles — Carry a minimum of 2 litres of water. There are freshwater streams on the trail but do not rely solely on them. Dehydration is the most common reason trekkers struggle on the ascent.
Snacks & Energy — Carry juice packs, energy bars, dry fruits, or glucose biscuits. A packed lunch is provided in your package, but snacks between meals keep your energy stable on the climb.
Head Torch — The trek starts early morning and the shola forest sections are dark before sunrise. A dedicated head torch with spare batteries is essential.
Power Bank — There is no charging facility on the trail. Carry a fully charged power bank to keep your phone alive for navigation, photos, and emergencies.
Personal Medication — Carry any prescription medication you take regularly. Also recommended: basic pain relief, ORS sachets, blister plasters, and insect repellent. Leeches are active during monsoon — carry salt or leech repellent spray.
Sunscreen & Lip Balm — The grassland and ridge sections have no tree cover. SPF 50 sunscreen is strongly recommended.
Alcohol — strictly prohibited inside the Kudremukh Forest Range
Single-use plastic — not permitted on the trail
Sharp objects, blades, or lighters
Jewellery or valuables
Large suitcases or trolley bags
Uncomfortable footwear (heels, sandals, flip flops)
