Western Ghats Trek
The Tadiandamol Trek is a 12 km round trip ascent to the highest peak in Coorg (Kodagu), standing at 1,748 m (5,735 ft) above sea level. Located near Kakkabe village in South Coorg, the trail winds through aromatic coffee estates, dense shola forest corridors, and opens into sweeping rolling grasslands before reaching a broad summit with panoramic views of the Coorg valley, the Brahmagiri range, and on exceptionally clear days, a distant glimmer of the Arabian Sea to the west.
Unlike permit-heavy or high-altitude treks, Tadiandamol is accessible, no-permit, and beginner-friendly — yet delivers summit scale and views that rival much harder trails. The combination of Coorg's famous misty mornings, lush coffee-country canopy, and wide open summit plateau makes this one of the most rewarding weekend treks from Bangalore in all of South India.
Most treks near Bangalore top out at forest ridgelines or viewpoints — good, but not true summits. Tadiandamol is the real thing: the highest peak in an entire district, with a summit plateau that gives you a full 360-degree horizon. The trail itself is beautifully varied — you start in coffee plantation shade, climb through cool shola forest alive with birdsong, then emerge onto open grassland slopes that build steadily to the top. No two sections feel the same, and the moment the forest opens onto the grassland ridge is one of the most satisfying transitions on any South India trek.

The Tadiandamol Trek is rated Easy to Moderate — one of the most accessible true summit treks from Bangalore. The trail has no technical sections, no ropes or scrambles, and the ascent is gradual for most of the route. The steeper sections come in the final 1.5 km across open grassland slopes approaching the summit, but these are comfortable for anyone with basic fitness and proper footwear.
Suitable for: First-time trekkers, beginners with basic fitness, families with older children (12+), and experienced trekkers looking for a relaxed Coorg summit weekend
Not recommended for: People with severe knee injuries or those who cannot walk 8–10 km comfortably
Fitness benchmark: If you can walk 8 km on flat ground without stopping, you can complete Tadiandamol with proper pacing and hydration.
Kakkabe is approximately 258 km from Bangalore via NH275 through Mysuru and Hunsur, then via the Virajpet road into South Coorg. The journey takes 5–6 hours by road. The Backpackers United package includes overnight transport from Bangalore with multiple city pickup points, so no self-arrangement is needed. Self-drive trekkers can park near the Kakkabe trailhead, which is about 500 m from the main homestay cluster.
The Tadiandamol region sits within the larger Western Ghats biodiversity corridor. The shola forest belt on the mid-trail section is home to Malabar giant squirrels, and Indian gaur (bison) have been spotted near the forest fringe in early mornings. The area has exceptional birdlife — Malabar whistling thrush, Indian roller, crested serpent eagle, and various flycatcher species are regularly sighted. The grassland summit zone bursts with wildflowers in October–November after monsoon, making it one of the most photogenic trekking windows in Karnataka.
Coorg offers several trek options — Kumara Parvatha, Brahmagiri, and trails within Nagarhole — but Tadiandamol occupies a unique position. It is more challenging than Brahmagiri but significantly more accessible than Kumara Parvatha (14 km, steep, permit-heavy, forest department restrictions). For trekkers who want a genuine highest-peak summit experience in Coorg without the extreme commitment of Kumara Parvatha, Tadiandamol is the ideal middle ground. The summit views on a clear day are comparable to any trek in Karnataka.
Backpackers United has been organising Tadiandamol treks since 2017 with certified trek leaders and local Kakkabe guides. Groups are strictly capped at 10 trekkers — not the 25–40 that bus-operator packages carry — ensuring genuine trail experience with proper guide attention. Transport, homestay accommodation, all listed meals, guide fees, and safety support are included. With 50,000+ trekkers and a 7-year track record across Karnataka, BPU is the most trusted organiser for weekend treks from Bangalore.

Arrive at the homestay in Kakkabe in the early hours of the morning. Freshen up, rest briefly, and enjoy a hot South Indian breakfast before starting your trek.
After the trek briefing and gear check, head to the trailhead and begin your ascent through aromatic coffee estate shade. The first 2 km are flat and cool — a natural warm-up through rows of coffee and silver oak. The trail then enters shola forest where the canopy closes overhead and temperature drops noticeably.
At around 4 km, the forest opens onto open grassland. The Tadiandamol summit is now fully visible — a broad rolling slope rising to the wide ridge top at 1,748 m. The final 2 km across grassland has the most elevation gain, but the expanding 360° panorama on all sides makes every step worth it.
Upon reaching the summit, enjoy panoramic views of the Coorg valley, the Brahmagiri range, and on clear December–January mornings, a distant shimmer of the Arabian Sea to the west. Take a break and enjoy your packed lunch at the top.
After summit time, begin the descent on the same trail and return to Kakkabe trailhead by early afternoon. Return to the homestay, freshen up, enjoy snacks, followed by dinner and overnight stay at the Kakkabe homestay.

Wake up early in the morning and enjoy freshly brewed Coorgi estate filter coffee at the homestay. Return to the homestay for breakfast and begin your journey back to Bangalore.
On the way, enjoy the scenic drive through Virajpet and Hunsur. You can have a delicious lunch on the way (self-sponsored) and enjoy the rest of the day.
Reach Bangalore by late evening with unforgettable memories of the Tadiandamol Trek.
(Note: Trek schedule may vary based on weather and road conditions. A reverse itinerary may be followed if required.)
The best time to trek Tadiandamol is October to March — the post-monsoon and winter window when the trail is dry, the summit grasslands are lush green or golden, and visibility from the peak at 1,748 m is at its clearest. Coorg is one of India's wettest districts, so choosing the right season dramatically changes the trek experience. Avoid June to September when the trail is slippery, visibility is zero, and leeches are active throughout the shola forest.
Best Season
October to March is the prime window for Tadiandamol. Post-monsoon (Oct–Nov) brings lush green grasslands and wildflowers on the summit ridge — the most photogenic window. December to February delivers the clearest summit views with cool, crisp air and minimal cloud cover — on the best days you can see the Arabian Sea to the west. January is the single best month for summit visibility. March remains pleasant before pre-monsoon heat builds from April.
Avoid
June to September is peak monsoon in Coorg and trekking Tadiandamol is not recommended. The trail through the shola forest becomes extremely slippery with exposed roots turning dangerous in wet conditions. Summit visibility drops to near zero as dense cloud covers the entire ridge. Leech activity is very high throughout the forest section. Backpackers United does not run scheduled batches during this period for safety reasons.
Pre-Monsoon
April and May are warm and dry with temperatures in Kakkabe reaching 28–32°C in the valley. The summit at 1,748 m is cooler, but the grasslands are dry and golden rather than green. Summit haze reduces visibility compared to the winter months. This is the least popular window — manageable for experienced trekkers who prefer quieter trails, but not recommended for first-timers or those expecting lush landscapes.
If you can trek only once, go in December or January — the summit views are at their sharpest, the weather is cool and dry, and the Coorg valley spread below is extraordinary on a clear morning. October and November are the best choice for green landscapes and wildflowers. Avoid the monsoon entirely.
The Tadiandamol Trek follows a single out-and-back trail starting from the Kakkabe village trailhead. The trail passes through three distinct zones — aromatic coffee estate, dense shola forest, and open summit grassland — before reaching the broad summit plateau at 1,748 m. Total distance is 12 km round trip.
The trek begins at the edge of Kakkabe village. The first section is flat and shaded — coffee and silver oak plantation on both sides with cool estate air making this the most comfortable stretch of the climb. This section is typically completed before 8:30 AM, before the sun rises above the canopy. At the 2 km mark, the trail enters shola forest and the character of the trek changes entirely.
Inside the shola forest, the canopy closes overhead and temperature drops noticeably. The trail becomes root-laced with rocky sections and small stream crossings. Malabar giant squirrels are commonly spotted overhead and birdlife is constant throughout. Trekking shoes with grip soles are essential here — exposed roots and occasional muddy patches make flat footwear dangerous.
At the 4 km mark the forest opens onto open grassland and the summit is suddenly fully visible. This is the most dramatic moment on the Tadiandamol trail. The final 2 km has the most elevation gain, climbing to the plateau at 1,748 m. On a clear day the 360° view from the top covers the Coorg valley, the Brahmagiri range, and on the clearest winter mornings, the Arabian Sea to the west. Allow 45–60 minutes at the summit before beginning your descent on the same trail.
The Tadiandamol trek from Bangalore offers a complete trekking experience through coffee estates, shola forest, and open summit grasslands. Expect a varied and rewarding trek with distinct trail zones and an expansive summit plateau with some of the finest views in Karnataka.
The highlight of the trek is reaching the summit at 1,748 m, where you can witness panoramic views of the Coorg valley, the Brahmagiri range, and on clear winter mornings, the Arabian Sea on the western horizon. The trek is accessible to fit beginners — the 12 km distance and gradual elevation make it manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness and proper footwear.
Since no forest permit is required, the trail is highly accessible. The small-group format (capped at 10 trekkers) and local Coorgi homestay make every Tadiandamol batch a genuine experience rather than a packaged group tour.
Accommodation is at a local homestay in Kakkabe village, approximately 500 m from the trek trailhead. Rooms are in twin-sharing or triple-sharing configuration with clean attached or shared bathrooms. Homestay facilities include hot water, home-cooked South Indian meals, and the quiet, warm atmosphere typical of Coorg's family-run properties. The homestay is operated by a local Coorgi family — expect genuine hospitality, freshly brewed estate filter coffee, and a peaceful night with valley views from the verandah. This is a genuine Coorg homestay experience, not a resort — part of what makes the Tadiandamol weekend feel different from a hotel-based trip.
Every Tadiandamol Trek batch is led by a Backpackers United certified trek leader supported by a local Kakkabe-based guide with deep knowledge of the trail, terrain, wildlife, and local conditions. Groups are strictly capped at 10 trekkers per batch — ensuring personal attention and a safe, manageable group size on the trail. The lead guide carries a complete first aid kit, manages pacing and hydration for the group, and handles all on-ground logistics from homestay check-in to trailhead departure and summit return.
Protected forest reserves here operate on a strict slot-based entry system. Every trekker must carry a valid permit issued through the Aranya Vihara portal before the checkpost.

Mandatory & Arranged
Your forest entry permit is pre-arranged and fully included — no separate booking needed on your end.
Permits are issued by the Karnataka Forest Department through the official Aranya Vihara portal.
Carry a valid government-issued photo ID on trek day — Aadhaar, passport, or driving licence.
Your assigned guide will hold the group permit and present it at the forest checkpost on arrival.
Daily entry slots are strictly limited; confirming your booking locks in your permit slot automatically.
Your permit is sorted. Just keep a valid photo ID handy on trek day. Prefer to arrange your own? Follow our step-by-step guide.
Trekking Shoes
Closed-toe shoes with a grip sole are essential. The Tadiandamol trail covers coffee estate mud, root-laced shola forest floor, and open grassland — all requiring ankle support and non-slip soles. Sandals, flip-flops, or flat sneakers will cause slipping and foot pain on the descent.
Rain Poncho / Waterproof Jacket
Even in dry season (October–March), Coorg mornings and summit ridges can be misty and cool. Post-monsoon months (October–November) see residual showers. A compact rain poncho weighs almost nothing and can be a trip-saver if caught in a passing shower on the exposed grassland section.
Daypack (20–30L)
A comfortable daypack to carry water, packed lunch, rain gear, and a light layer. Keep total pack weight under 5–6 kg for a comfortable 12 km round trip. Leave non-essential luggage at the homestay.
Water (2–3 Litres)
There are no reliable water sources on the Tadiandamol trail above the shola forest section. Carry minimum 2 litres — 3 litres if you sweat heavily or trek in the warmer months. Hydration is the single biggest factor in how you feel on the summit ascent. ORS sachets are a useful addition.
Warm Layer / Fleece
The Tadiandamol summit ridge at 1,748 m is wind-exposed. Summit temperatures in December–February can drop to 8–12°C with wind chill. A fleece or light down jacket weighs very little and makes the summit experience comfortable rather than a rush to descend.
Sunscreen (SPF 50+)
The open grassland section from 4 km onwards is fully exposed to direct sunlight. Apply sunscreen before leaving the homestay and carry a small bottle for reapplication at the summit. UV intensity at this elevation is higher than most trekkers expect.
Sunglasses
Protects your eyes from UV on the exposed summit grasslands and reduces fatigue during the morning ascent when the sun is low and direct. Any UV-protective sunglasses work — polarised lenses are ideal.
Headlamp / Torch
The early morning arrival in Kakkabe (4:30–5:30 AM) means moving around before sunrise. A torch or headlamp is useful for navigating the homestay and packing your daypack before breakfast. Also useful if the descent extends into late afternoon.
Snacks & Energy Food
Carry dry snacks — trail mix, energy bars, glucose biscuits, nuts, or dates — to supplement the packed lunch. Small energy boosts during the ascent and at the summit help maintain stamina for the 6 km descent.
Trekking Pole (Optional)
Not mandatory, but helpful for the descent. The return trail through shola forest has some steep sections where poles reduce knee stress significantly. Recommended for trekkers with prior knee concerns or those doing a long trek for the first time.
Full-Sleeve Clothing
Wear full-sleeve, moisture-wicking fabric. Protects against sun exposure on the grassland section, insect bites in the shola forest, and keeps you comfortable across the temperature variation from warm valley floor to cool summit ridge.
Personal Medication
Carry any prescription medicines you take regularly. Useful additions: paracetamol for headache or mild fever, an antacid, and an anti-diarrhoeal tablet. The trek leader carries a group first aid kit, but personal medications must be self-managed.
ID Proof
Carry a government-issued photo ID — Aadhaar card, driving licence, or passport. Required for homestay check-in.
Camera / Phone with Extra Battery
The Tadiandamol summit and the misty shola forest mid-section are highly photogenic. Carry a power bank — cold summit temperatures drain phone batteries faster than at lower altitude, and you will want your phone ready for summit panorama photos.
What NOT to Carry
Single-use plastic bottles or disposables — Carry only reusable water bottles. No single-use plastics on the trail — the Tadiandamol grassland and shola ecosystem is fragile and litter causes lasting damage.
Alcohol or tobacco — Not permitted on the trail or at homestay common areas. Respect local Coorgi culture and the natural environment.
Bluetooth speakers — The trail passes through wildlife habitat. Loud music disturbs animals and ruins the natural experience for fellow trekkers.
Heavy duffel bags or rolling luggage — Only a daypack goes on the trail. All large bags stay at the homestay.
Flat sneakers, formal shoes, or sandals — These have no traction on forest and grassland terrain. Only trekking shoes or trail runners.
