The Bandaje Falls Trek is an 18 km round trip waterfall trek inside the Kudremukh Forest Range in Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka — a trail that climbs to 1,500 m (4,921 ft) through dense shola forest, passes the ruins of a 15th-century hilltop fort, and ends at the base of Bandaje Falls, a 200-foot waterfall deep inside a protected forest gorge.
Unlike most waterfall treks near Bangalore that end at a viewpoint above the falls, Bandaje takes you all the way to the base — standing directly in front of a 200-foot cascade in a narrow forest gorge with no road access and no shortcut in. The only way there is on foot.
Most waterfall treks near Bangalore are straightforward walks to a single destination. Bandaje adds a full historical layer — the trail passes through the ruins of Ballalarayana Durga Fort, a 15th-century hilltop fortification that sits at elevation midway through the route. The fort gives Bandaje its edge over every other waterfall trek in Karnataka: you get sweeping views of the Kudremukh range from the ramparts before the trail descends into the forest gorge below.

Suitable for: Fit beginners, intermediate and experienced trekkers
Not recommended for: People with serious knee injuries or cardiovascular conditions
Fitness benchmark: If you can walk 6–8 km comfortably on flat ground, you can complete Bandaje with proper pacing and the support of our trek leader.
Bandaje Falls is approximately 290–300 km from Bangalore via NH75 — around 6–7 hours by road. Our package includes round-trip non-AC transportation from four pickup points in Bangalore: Indiranagar, Domlur, Yeshwantpur, and Gorguntepalya. The overnight vehicle reaches the base village by early morning, giving you a full day for the trek.
Independent travel: Take NH75 from Bangalore towards Mangalore, exit towards Sakleshpur, and continue to Ujire in Dakshina Kannada. From Ujire, the trek base at Sunkasale village is approximately 15 km further. The last stretch is a narrow winding road — a high-clearance vehicle is recommended.
The trail runs through the Kudremukh National Park buffer zone — part of the Netravati River basin and one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in India. The shola forest supports species found nowhere else on earth.
What you may encounter on the trail:
• Lion-tailed macaques in the upper canopy
• Malabar giant squirrels near the fort section
• Endemic birds including Malabar whistling thrush and Malabar grey hornbill
• Rare orchids, mosses, and ferns along stream crossings
• Leeches during and immediately after monsoon
Iruppu Falls: Road accessible, no trekking involved, completely crowded — no comparison.
Abbey Falls: 5-minute walk from a parking lot — not a trek.
Magod Falls: Scenic but no forest depth or fort element.
Hebbe Falls: Jeep ride most of the way, shorter walk.
Bandaje Falls: 18 km round trip on foot, inside a protected forest, past a 15th-century fort, to the base of a 200-ft waterfall — the only waterfall trek in Karnataka that combines all three.

Bandaje Falls Trek can be done almost year-round, but the waterfall, trail conditions, and forest quality change significantly with the season. Here is what each season looks like.
Peak Season – Best Conditions
The best time for Bandaje Falls Trek. Post-monsoon (October–November) the falls are at full power and the forest is vivid green. December to February brings cool, clear weather with excellent visibility from Ballalarayana Durga Fort. Trails are dry and firm — ideal for beginners and experienced trekkers alike.
Waterfall at Peak – Trails Slippery
Bandaje Falls is most dramatic during monsoon — the 200-ft cascade roars at full volume and the forest turns an intense deep green. Trails become slippery and rocky sections near the falls are wet throughout. Good grip trekking shoes are essential. Not recommended for first-timers.
Hot & Dry – Falls Reduced
The least ideal time for this trek. Temperatures rise significantly, the waterfall reduces considerably by May, and the shola forest loses much of its lush quality. If summer is your only option, start early and carry extra water.
October to February is the window to target for first-timers. For the waterfall at absolute full force, October and November immediately post-monsoon is the sweet spot.
Bandaje Falls Trek is a proper forest trek — not a walk to a roadside viewpoint. The trail crosses streams, climbs to a hilltop fort with panoramic views, descends through dense forest, and ends at a 200-ft waterfall standing in a gorge that feels completely cut off from the outside world. The Ballalarayana Durga Fort midway through the route adds a historical dimension that no other waterfall trek near Bangalore can match. Expect mud, rocks, stream crossings, and one of the most satisfying waterfall arrivals in Karnataka.
One night at a local homestay near Sunkasale village in Dakshina Kannada — the base for the trek. Rooms are in dormitory or sharing arrangement based on availability. Meals are home-cooked, generous, and hot. A genuine homestay that fits the spirit of the trek — nothing fancy, everything comfortable.
Each batch is led by one certified trek leader with valid forest department permits for the Kudremukh zone. Groups are capped at 10 trekkers per batch — kept small so every trekker gets proper attention on the trail. First aid is carried on all treks. Permits, meals, and logistics are fully managed so you stay focused on the trek.
Protected forest reserves here operate on a strict slot-based entry system. Every trekker must carry a valid permit issued through the Aranya Vihara portal before the checkpost.
Permit

Certified Guide
Mandatory & Arranged
Your forest entry permit is pre-arranged and fully included — no separate booking needed on your end.
Permits are issued by the Karnataka Forest Department through the official Aranya Vihara portal.
Carry a valid government-issued photo ID on trek day — Aadhaar, passport, or driving licence.
Your assigned guide will hold the group permit and present it at the forest checkpost on arrival.
Daily entry slots are strictly limited; confirming your booking locks in your permit slot automatically.
Your permit is sorted. Just keep a valid photo ID handy on trek day. Prefer to arrange your own? Follow our step-by-step guide.
Valid Photo ID: Carry a hard copy of a government-issued photo ID — Aadhaar, driving licence, or passport. The forest department checks ID at the checkpost before issuing entry. A soft copy on your phone is not accepted.
Trekking Shoes: Proper trekking shoes with ankle support and good grip are mandatory. The trail has multiple stream crossings, muddy sections on the forest floor, and rocky terrain near the falls. Sandals, casual sneakers, or floaters are not suitable and will be turned back at the checkpost.
Backpack: A 20–30 litre daypack is ideal. Avoid large suitcases or trolley bags — you will be trekking 18 km and need both hands free. Use a rain cover or waterproof bag liner to protect your gear.
Water: Carry a minimum of 2–3 litres of water. There are freshwater streams on the trail but do not rely solely on them. Dehydration is the most common reason people drop out midway on this trek.
Rain Gear: A lightweight poncho or waterproof jacket is essential even outside monsoon season. The Kudremukh Forest Range weather changes quickly and rain can start without warning at any time of year. The descent to the falls is especially exposed to spray.
Clothing: Wear full-sleeved t-shirts and full-length track pants. The trail has thorns, insects, and direct sun on the fort section. Carry one spare set of quick-dry clothes for the homestay overnight stay.
Headlamp: The group departs Bangalore overnight and reaches the base early morning. A headlamp with spare batteries is essential. Phone flashlights drain battery fast — carry a dedicated torch.
Sunscreen: The Ballalarayana Durga Fort section has no tree cover and direct sun exposure. SPF 40+ sunscreen is strongly recommended.
Snacks & Energy: Carry energy bars, dry fruits, or glucose biscuits for the trail. Packed lunch is included in your package but snacks between meals keep your energy stable on the long descent to the falls.
Power Bank: There are no charging points on the trail or at the base village. Carry a fully charged power bank to keep your phone alive for photos, navigation, and emergencies.
Personal Medications: Carry any prescription medicine you take regularly. Also recommended: basic pain relief, ORS sachets for dehydration, and blister plasters. A blister on an 18 km trek without a plaster can become a serious problem.
Insect Repellent: The shola forest section has mosquitoes and during monsoon, leeches are common. Apply repellent before entering the forest.
Quick-Dry Towel: You will likely get wet — stream crossings, waterfall spray, and rain. A quick-dry towel is more useful than a cotton one.
Trekking Pole: Recommended for the rocky descent to the falls and the steep drop from the fort. Not mandatory but significantly reduces knee strain on the way down.
Cash: There are no ATMs at the base village or anywhere near the trailhead. Carry enough cash for the full trip before leaving Bangalore.
• Alcohol — strictly prohibited inside the Kudremukh Forest Reserve
• Single-use plastic — not permitted on the trail
• Large suitcases or trolley bags
• Jewellery or valuables
• Casual footwear (sandals, flip flops, heels)
• Anything not listed in the essentials above
