The Kodachadri Trek is a 13 km trek to the 10th highest peak in Karnataka, located inside Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary in Shimoga district. The peak stands at 4,403 ft (1,342 m) and is a Government of Karnataka designated Natural Heritage Site. The trail passes through paddy fields, dense jungle, open grasslands, and directly through Hidlumane Waterfalls before reaching a summit with unobstructed views of the Arabian Sea — one of the very few Western Ghats peaks from which the sea is clearly visible.
Unlike most Karnataka treks that are purely forest or grassland trails, Kodachadri gives you a waterfall crossing mid-trail, a historically significant summit, and a jeep descent instead of a foot descent — making it a genuinely different experience from beginning to end.
Most treks near Bangalore offer either forest trails or summit views. Kodachadri delivers both — plus a waterfall on the trail, a historical summit with a religious shrine, and an Arabian Sea sunset from 4,403 ft. The trail passes directly through Hidlumane Falls — not a viewpoint, not a detour, but an actual mid-trail waterfall crossing that is one of the most memorable moments on any Western Ghats trail.
Kodachadri is not just a trek — it is a historically significant summit. The name derives from the Sanskrit word 'Kutaja' — meaning jasmine of the hills. The summit is believed to be where Adi Shankara, the 8th-century philosopher and Vedic scholar, meditated and attained enlightenment. The Sarvajna Peetha — a throne of omniscience — at the peak marks this connection. There is also a small Mookambika Devi temple at the summit. No other weekend trek from Bangalore has this kind of historical and spiritual depth at the top.
Location: Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary, Shimoga District, Karnataka
Distance from Bangalore: 390 km (approximately 6–7 hours by road)
Trek Distance: 13 km
Max Altitude: 4,403 ft (1,342 m)
Active Trek Duration: 7–8 hours (ascent 4–5 hours, jeep descent)
Difficulty: Moderate
Best Time: September to February
Forest Permit: Mandatory — included
Guide: Mandatory — provided
Pickup: 9:00 PM from Indiranagar, Bangalore
The Kodachadri Trek is rated Moderate. The ascent involves steep inclines, rocky paths, a river crossing at Hidlumane Falls, and dense forest sections in low visibility. The descent is done by jeep — which cuts return time significantly and saves your knees for the next adventure.
Suitable for: Fit beginners, intermediate and experienced trekkers
Not recommended for: People with serious knee injuries or cardiovascular conditions
Prior experience: Desirable but not mandatory
Fitness benchmark: If you can walk 6–8 km on flat ground comfortably, you can complete Kodachadri with proper pacing and a guide.
Kodachadri is approximately 390 km from Bangalore via NH169 — around 6–7 hours by road. Our package includes round-trip non-AC transportation from four Bangalore pickup points: Indiranagar, Domlur, Yeshwantpur, and Gorguntepalya. The overnight vehicle reaches the base village by early morning, giving you a full day for the trek.
Independent travel: Take NH169 from Bangalore towards Shimoga and Sagar. Continue towards Kollur and turn towards Nagodi or Sampekatte village — the base of the trek. The final section is a narrow winding road through the sanctuary. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended.
The trail runs through Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary — a rich biodiversity zone in the Western Ghats listed under India's protected area network.
What you may spot on the trail:
• White-bellied treepie and Pompadour green pigeon in the lower forest
• Malabar grey hornbill and Great Indian hornbill in the canopy
• Lion-tailed macaques and Malabar giant squirrel in forest sections
• Rare orchids and endemic ferns along the Hidlumane Falls crossing
• Leeches during monsoon season
The summit grasslands offer some of the best sunset watching in the Western Ghats — the sun dropping into the Arabian Sea on a clear day from 4,403 ft is a view very few Karnataka treks can match.
Kudremukh: Higher altitude, longer trail, more famous. Kudremukh has rolling grasslands and ridge walks. Kodachadri has a historical summit, Hidlumane Falls mid-trail, and jeep descent.
Kumara Parvatha: The hardest trek in Karnataka — significantly more demanding than Kodachadri. Not for beginners.
Bandaje Falls: Waterfall focused, shorter, inside Kudremukh range. Kodachadri offers more elevation and a summit.
Netravati Peak: Easier, shorter, same Kudremukh zone. Kodachadri is standalone in the Mookambika zone with the Arabian Sea view.
Verdict: Kodachadri is the right choice if you want a historically significant summit, a waterfall mid-trail, Arabian Sea views, and a jeep descent — all in one weekend from Bangalore.

Kodachadri Trek can be done across most of the year but the trail, the waterfall, and the summit views change significantly with the season. Here is what each season looks like.
Peak Season – Best Conditions
The best time for Kodachadri Trek. September and October bring post-monsoon freshness — Hidlumane Falls at near-full flow, vivid green forest, and clear summit views. November to February is cool and dry with the sharpest visibility of the Arabian Sea from the summit. Trails are firm, the grasslands are lush, and weather is consistently good. This is the window to target.
Waterfalls at Peak – Trails Slippery
Hidlumane Falls is at its most spectacular during peak monsoon — a powerful roaring cascade that completely transforms the mid-trail experience. However, the forest trail is extremely slippery, rocky sections are dangerous when wet, and leeches are present throughout. Suitable only for experienced trekkers with proper grip shoes and rain gear. Not recommended for beginners.
Hot & Dry – Falls Reduced
The least ideal time for Kodachadri Trek. Temperatures inside the forest rise significantly, Hidlumane Falls reduces to a trickle by May, and the grasslands lose their green quality. The summit Arabian Sea view is often hazy due to heat. If summer is your only option, start the trek very early and carry extra water.
September to February is the window — post-monsoon freshness through clear winter skies. For the Arabian Sea sunset view specifically, October to January gives the clearest horizon from the summit.

The Kodachadri Trek is one of the most complete Western Ghats experiences available on a single weekend from Bangalore — a forest trail that crosses a waterfall, climbs to a historically significant summit with an Arabian Sea view, and descends by jeep. The trail passes through paddy fields at the base, dense shola canopy in the middle, Hidlumane Falls as a natural rest stop, and open rolling grasslands at the top. The summit has a temple, a historical throne, and a view that most people in Bangalore do not know exists 390 km away.
One night at a local Malnad homestay near Sampekatte — the base for the trek. Rooms are on a dormitory basis. Meals are home-cooked local Malnad food — generous, hot, and authentically prepared. A genuine homestay experience that is a highlight of the trip for most trekkers.
Every Kodachadri batch is led by a certified Backpackers United trek leader with a licensed local forest guide. The local guide has detailed knowledge of the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary trail, all checkpoints, and the Hidlumane Falls crossing. Safety protocols are followed throughout. First aid is carried on all treks. Permits, jeep, meals, and sightseeing are fully managed.
Protected forest reserves here operate on a strict slot-based entry system. Every trekker must carry a valid permit issued through the Aranya Vihara portal before the checkpost.
Permit
Included in Package
Certified Guide
Mandatory & Arranged
Your forest entry permit is pre-arranged and fully included — no separate booking needed on your end.
Permits are issued by the Karnataka Forest Department through the official Aranya Vihara portal.
Carry a valid government-issued photo ID on trek day — Aadhaar, passport, or driving licence.
Your assigned guide will hold the group permit and present it at the forest checkpost on arrival.
Daily entry slots are strictly limited; confirming your booking locks in your permit slot automatically.
Your permit is sorted. Just keep a valid photo ID handy on trek day. Prefer to arrange your own? Follow our step-by-step guide.
Valid Photo ID: Carry a hard copy of a government-issued photo ID — Aadhaar, driving licence, or passport. The forest department checks ID at the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary checkpost before issuing permits. A soft copy on your phone is not accepted.
Trekking Shoes: Proper trekking shoes with ankle support and good grip are mandatory. The trail has steep sections, multiple stream crossings, the Hidlumane Falls crossing, and muddy forest sections. Sandals or casual sneakers will be turned back at the checkpost. This is the single most important item to get right.
Backpack: A 20–30 litre daypack. Avoid large suitcases — you are trekking 13 km uphill and need both hands free. Use a waterproof liner or rain cover as forest humidity and falls spray can wet your bag even outside monsoon.
Water: Carry a minimum of 2–3 litres. Freshwater is available at Hidlumane Falls and some stream crossings, but do not rely solely on these. Dehydration is the most common reason people drop out midway on this trail.
Rain Gear: A poncho or waterproof jacket is essential even outside monsoon. Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary weather changes fast and the Hidlumane Falls crossing will get your outer layer wet regardless of season.
Clothing: Full-sleeved t-shirts and full-length track pants. The trail has dense undergrowth, thorns, and insects at the lower sections. Carry one spare set of clothes for the homestay overnight.
Headlamp: The trek begins early morning and the forest is dark at the entry section. A dedicated headlamp with spare batteries is essential. Phone flashlights drain battery fast on a 7–8 hour trek.
Sunscreen: The summit grassland and ridge section has no tree cover and direct sun exposure. SPF 40+ sunscreen is strongly recommended.
Snacks & Energy: Carry energy bars, dry fruits, and glucose biscuits for the trail. Packed lunch is provided and served at the summit, but snacks between meals keep energy stable on the steep ascent.
Power Bank: No charging points on the trail or at the homestay during the day. Carry a fully charged power bank — summit photos and a full day of trekking will drain your phone.
Personal Medications: Carry any prescription medicine you take regularly. Also recommended: basic pain relief, ORS sachets, and blister plasters. The Hidlumane Falls crossing can cause wet feet — blister plasters are more useful here than on most other treks.
Trekking Pole: Recommended for the steep ascent sections and the rocky stream crossings near the falls. Not mandatory but significantly reduces knee strain.
Cash: No ATMs near the trek base or trailhead. Carry enough cash for personal expenses, Sakrebailu Elephant Camp entry, and Day 2 meals before leaving Bangalore.
