If you're looking for a break from Bangalore that really caters to your love for nature, then the Kudremukh Trek in Chikmagalur district of Karnataka is unbeatable. The Kudremukh Hill is only 335 km from Bangalore and is in the midst of the Kudremukh National Park—the largest wildlife protected area in the Western Ghats. The word ‘Kudremukh’, literally in Kannada, means 'horse face,' which has been perfectly named because that is exactly how the peak looks from a distance. From an altitude of 6207 feet, you can depart onto a unique and breathtaking experience to Kudremukh Trek, which is the third highest peak in Karnataka after Mullayanangiri and Baba Budangiri.
With its beautiful landscapes and vast biodiversity, Kudremukh has been christened the 'Heaven of South India.' It is even recognized by UNESCO as one of the World Heritage Sites. Starting from rolling green hills and misty valleys, one can witness a variety of wildlife, from deers and peacocks to lion-tailed macaques and Malabar giant squirrels. The path of the trek goes through grasslands, forests, and streams. The most interesting part will be your journey through the Shola forest with its wide variety of flora and fauna. One can compare the views at the top of the peak with the Himalayas in terms of grandeur and beauty.
The Kudremukh Trek satisfies human needs for a physical challenge while immersing oneself in the beauty of nature. The base of the Kudremukh Trek is the Mullodi village; once it is crossed, you have to negotiate dense forests, wade across streams, and climb ridges. On the way, you will come across some beautiful views like the Ontimara and several other viewpoints that make the Kudremukh Trek an unforgettable experience. This steep climb and subtle slope take one to the top of the peak, which offers beautiful vistas of the Kudremukh Valley and the green hills surrounding it. June to February is the best season for the Kudremukh Trek and the landscape comes at its best in the post-monsoon season.
Other nearby attractions like the Horanadu temple, Netravati Trek, Ballarayanadurga Fort Trek, and waterfalls give further enticements for this destination in trekkers' radar.
