Western Ghats Trek
The Kumara Parvatha Trek is a 14 km round trip trek to the second highest peak in Karnataka, located inside Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary in Somvarpet, Coorg. The peak stands at 5,617 ft (1,712 m) and the trail passes through some of the densest rainforest in the Western Ghats before opening into a wide summit grassland with sweeping views of the Coorg valley, coffee estate hills, and the surrounding peaks of the Pushpagiri range.
Unlike most treks near Bangalore that are forest trails with a summit as the reward, Kumara Parvatha gives you both in equal measure — a dense, immersive rainforest ascent followed by a completely open, wind-exposed summit grassland that feels like a different world from the forest below.
Kumara Parvatha is widely considered one of the toughest weekend treks from Bangalore — and also one of the most rewarding. The trail demands sustained effort over 14 km with significant elevation gain, but the summit at 5,617 ft is one of the most panoramic viewpoints in Karnataka. On a clear day you can see deep into the Coorg valley, over the coffee estate ridges, and across the Pushpagiri range all the way to the horizon. No other trek within a 5-hour drive of Bangalore delivers this combination of forest depth and summit scale.
Location: Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, Somvarpet, Coorg (Kodagu), Karnataka
Distance from Bangalore: Approximately 270 km (5–6 hours by road)
Trek Distance: 14 km round trip
Max Altitude: 5,617 ft (1,712 m)
Active Trek Duration: 7–9 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
Best Time: October to February
Forest Permit: Mandatory — included
Guide: Mandatory — provided
Pickup: 9:00 PM from Indiranagar, Bangalore
The Kumara Parvatha Trek is rated Moderate to Challenging. The trail has sustained steep sections, dense forest with uneven footing, and a long summit ridge exposed to wind. This is not a technical climb — there are no ropes or scrambles — but the combination of distance, elevation gain, and terrain makes it significantly harder than most South India treks.
Suitable for: Fit beginners with prior trek experience, intermediate and experienced trekkers
Not recommended for: Complete first-timers with no fitness base, people with serious knee injuries
Fitness benchmark: If you have completed at least one moderate trek and can walk 8–10 km comfortably, you can complete Kumara Parvatha with proper pacing.
Kumara Parvatha is approximately 270 km from Bangalore via NH275 through Mysuru and Kushalnagar — around 5–6 hours by road. Our package includes round-trip non-AC transportation from four Bangalore pickup points: Indiranagar, Domlur, Yeshwantpur, and Gorguntepalya. The overnight vehicle reaches the base at Somvarpet by early morning.
Independent travel: Take NH275 from Bangalore to Mysuru, continue to Kushalnagar, and drive through to Somvarpet in Coorg. GPS to Somvarpet and ask locally for the Kumara Parvatha trailhead.
The trail runs through Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary — one of the most biodiverse rainforest zones in the Western Ghats.
Kudremukh: Same difficulty bracket. Kudremukh has rolling grasslands and a ridge walk. Kumara Parvatha has a denser rainforest trail and a higher, more dramatic summit at 5,617 ft.
Kodachadri: Lower altitude, shorter, includes Hidlumane Falls and jeep descent. Kodachadri is better for first-timers. Kumara Parvatha is harder and higher.
Tadiandamol: Also in Coorg, easier, no permits required. Kumara Parvatha is the harder and more rewarding Coorg trek.
Verdict: Kumara Parvatha is the right choice if you want the most demanding and most rewarding summit trek from Bangalore — the Western Ghats at their highest and most immersive.

Trail Progression:
Forest entry through dense Coorg rainforest (~3 km, 1.5 hours) — thick canopy, uneven trail, stream crossings and immediate elevation gain from the first step
Mid-trail steep ascent through continuous rainforest (~4 km, 2.5 hours) — the most demanding section with sustained climbs, dense undergrowth, and multiple rocky stretches
Forest to grassland transition (~1 km, 45 minutes) — the trail opens dramatically from dense forest into wide open summit grasslands — one of the most rewarding moments on the trek
Kumara Parvatha Summit (5,617 ft / 1,712 m) — panoramic views of the Coorg valley, surrounding coffee estate hills, and the full Pushpagiri range. The Sarvajna Peetha area and surrounding ridge offer 360° views on clear days. Packed lunch at the summit.
Descent: Follow the same trail back down. Steep in sections — take it slow, use trekking poles, and watch footing on the rocky stretches.
Return to homestay by evening. Hot snacks, dinner, bonfire (weather permitting), overnight rest.
Overnight: Homestay near Somvarpet, Coorg (Kodagu).
Morning at the homestay — hot breakfast and checkout before beginning the drive back with two worthwhile stops along the way.
Mallali Falls: A powerful waterfall near Somvarpet — one of the tallest single-drop falls in Coorg, set inside forest. A perfect natural stop before leaving the region.
Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple), Bylakuppe: One of the largest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries outside Tibet — golden pagodas, giant Buddha statues, and intricately painted murals. One of the most visually striking places in South India and completely unexpected on the way back from a Western Ghats trek.
Self-sponsored lunch en route. Reach Bangalore by 11:00 PM – midnight depending on traffic.
Note: Drop points are the same as pickup locations. Travel time may vary based on road conditions.
Kumara Parvatha is a rainforest trek and the experience changes significantly with the season — the trail conditions, forest character, and summit visibility all shift. Here is what each season looks like.
Season – Best Conditions
The best time for Kumara Parvatha Trek. October and November bring post-monsoon freshness — the Coorg rainforest is at its most vivid and the trail is firm. December to February is cool, dry, and clear with excellent summit visibility across the Coorg valley and surrounding peaks. This is the window to target for first-timers and for the best summit experience.
Heavy Rain – Leeches & Slippery Trails
Kumara Parvatha receives heavy Coorg monsoon rainfall from June to September. The Pushpagiri rainforest is intensely green but the trail becomes extremely slippery, leeches are present throughout, and the steep sections are genuinely dangerous when wet. Not recommended for any experience level during peak monsoon. Experienced trekkers with full rain gear can attempt late September.
Hot & Humid – Not Ideal
March to May is hot and humid inside the Coorg rainforest. The trail is operable but the combination of heat, humidity, and steep climbs makes it significantly more exhausting. Summit visibility can also be hazy. If this is your only option, start very early and carry extra water.
October to February is the clear window for Kumara Parvatha Trek. November to January offers the best all-round conditions — post-monsoon forest quality, dry trails, and sharp summit views across the Coorg valley.
Kumara Parvatha Trek is the most demanding Western Ghats weekend trek from Bangalore — and the most rewarding. The trail spends most of its length inside a dense Coorg rainforest with continuous elevation gain and very little flat walking. It demands real effort. What you get at the top is a wide open summit at 5,617 ft with one of the most expansive views available from any South India peak — the full Coorg valley, coffee estate ridges, and the Pushpagiri range stretching to the horizon. There is no shortcut to this summit and that is exactly what makes it worth it.
One night at a local homestay near Somvarpet in Coorg — the base for the trek. Rooms are on a dormitory or twin-sharing basis depending on availability. Meals are home-cooked, hot, and generous. Expect local Kodava food, good hospitality, and the kind of rest you need before a challenging trek.
Every Kumara Parvatha batch is led by a certified Backpackers United trek leader with a licensed local forest guide from the Somvarpet area. The local guide has detailed knowledge of the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary trail and all forest checkpoints. Safety protocols are followed at all steep sections. First aid is carried on all treks. Permits, meals, and logistics are fully managed so you stay focused on the trail.
Protected forest reserves here operate on a strict slot-based entry system. Every trekker must carry a valid permit issued through the Aranya Vihara portal before the checkpost.
Permit
Included in Package
Certified Guide
Mandatory & Arranged
Your forest entry permit is pre-arranged and fully included — no separate booking needed on your end.
Permits are issued by the Karnataka Forest Department through the official Aranya Vihara portal.
Carry a valid government-issued photo ID on trek day — Aadhaar, passport, or driving licence.
Your assigned guide will hold the group permit and present it at the forest checkpost on arrival.
Daily entry slots are strictly limited; confirming your booking locks in your permit slot automatically.
Your permit is sorted. Just keep a valid photo ID handy on trek day. Prefer to arrange your own? Follow our step-by-step guide.
Valid Photo ID: Carry a hard copy of a government-issued photo ID — Aadhaar, driving licence, or passport. The forest department checks ID at the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary checkpost before issuing permits. A soft copy on your phone is not accepted.
Trekking Shoes: Mandatory — no exceptions. The Kumara Parvatha trail has sustained steep sections, dense forest with uneven roots and rocks, and stream crossings. Ankle support and strong grip are essential. Sandals or casual shoes are not permitted at the checkpost.
Backpack: A 25–35 litre daypack. You are covering 14 km of serious elevation gain — both hands need to be free. Use a waterproof liner or rain cover. Coorg humidity will dampen your bag even without rain.
Water: Carry a minimum of 3 litres. The rainforest humidity makes hydration more critical than on most other treks. There are stream crossings but do not rely on them as your only water source.
Rain Gear: A poncho or waterproof jacket is essential even outside monsoon. Coorg is one of the wettest regions in India and sudden showers can happen year-round. The summit ridge is completely exposed.
Clothing: Full-sleeved t-shirts and full-length track pants. The Coorg rainforest trail has thorns, insects, and leeches post-monsoon. Never trek in shorts on this trail. Carry one spare dry set for the homestay.
Headlamp: The group departs overnight and the trek begins in early morning darkness. The lower forest section before sunrise is completely dark. A dedicated headlamp with spare batteries is essential.
Trekking Pole: Strongly recommended. The sustained steep ascent and descent over 14 km puts significant strain on knees. A pole reduces this substantially and improves balance on rocky forest sections.
Sunscreen: The summit grassland is fully exposed with no shade. SPF 40+ sunscreen is important for the upper ridge and summit section even in cooler months.
Snacks & Energy: Carry energy bars, dry fruits, and glucose biscuits. Packed lunch is provided at the summit but the ascent is long — snacks between meals are essential for maintaining energy on this trail.
Power Bank: No charging facilities on the trail or at the homestay. A full day of trekking and summit photography will drain your phone completely.
Personal Medications: Carry any prescription medicine regularly taken. Also: basic pain relief, blister plasters, ORS sachets. The Coorg rainforest has leeches post-monsoon — carry leech repellent if trekking October–November.
Leech Protection: If trekking October–November, carry a leech repellent stick or salt in a small pouch. Tuck track pants into socks before entering the forest section.
Cash: No ATMs near the Somvarpet trailhead. Carry sufficient cash for Day 2 lunch, Bylakuppe entry, and personal expenses before leaving Bangalore.
