Overview

Rayakottai Fort Trek; A Perfect 1-Day Adventure

The Rayakottai Fort Trek has history, nature, and adventure in its perfect doses. It is located in the Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu and dates back to the times of Tipu Sultan. Among the few in the nation, Rayakottai Fort was built to defend against British rule, and being at the top gives it an interesting glance into South India's heritage. The fort stands on quite a climbable hill and hence serves as a good option for beginners or anybody who wants to respite just for a little while from the din and bustle of city life. When you reach higher, you will see striking scenarios of rocky routes to the top and ancient structures on the way to the fort.

The trek to Rayakottai Fort covers an altitude of about 1,195 meters on a moderate 5 km trail that starts from the base village, and then winds its way up on boulder-filled paths, scrubs, and remnants of ancient stone steps. You pass through small caves, ruined fortifications, and even a water tank that adds layer by layer of intrigue to the journey. The climb is not excessively steep and hence comfortable to climb, especially for a beginner, while for the seasoned trekker, variety in the landscape will also be an added interest. Reaching the summit of Rayakottai Fort feels like going back in time. The views are awesome, from the valleys stretching to distances and hills beyond our vision. It's a feeling of excitement, so much soothing, as you explore the ruins of the ancient fort and think about the battles fought here. It feels like a magic while standing on a centuries-old structure with nature all around you. It gives rewarding sensations, and is also nice for reflection and for taking some good photos.

Trekking Rayakottai Fort is best done between October and March, with the climate remaining cool and the skies clear during these months. The temperatures tend to go up from 20°C to 30°C during these months, hence trekking becomes comfortable. The summer months of April to June definitely can get hot at temperatures up to even 40° C, hence making it difficult to climb. Also, the monsoons start from July to September, and occasional showers make the trail slippery. If you are trekking with Backpackers United, you will have nothing to do with permits, as that is handled by us. In this respect, the whole process is hassle-free.

Approach the base camp of Rayakottai Fort Trek from Bangalore which is 85 km away via NH44, passing through Hosur to Krishnagiri. From Krishnagiri, take the route leading to Rayakottai village, and after driving for one hour, you shall find the base camp near the village. If you are arriving from Chennai, which is a distance of about 300 km, then take NH48 up to Krishnagiri and local roads to Rayakottai; the drive may take around 5-6 hours, so begin early in the morning. Coimbatore is 200 km away, and the Salem route by NH544 and the diversion into SH18 provides a route to Rayakottai in 4 to 5 hours by road. The connectivity of Rayakottai is also equally good through buses and trains from major cities throughout South India.

Engaging in the Rayakottai Fort Trek along with its numerous attractions makes for an unforgettable adventure. The fort that was built in the times of Tipu Sultan stands to testify to the fact that it is indeed historical and will convey its strategic past through its ruins, hidden chambers, and ancient fortifications. This fort stands with an exciting combination of grandeur combined with decay, featuring imposing arches and bastions. A number of small caves come into view during the course of this trek along the trail that are used either as 'attdars' or as hideaways, adding an element of exploration to the trek. The trek is also good for spotting local wildlife, birds, and small mammals amidst unique plant species. It is close enough to major cities, yet the trek is not too congested and provides a peaceful retreat from the hustle of urban life.
