Shalimar Bagh is a Mughal Garden located in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. It was built by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1619, making it the earliest of the Mughal imperial gardens. The garden is known by other names such as Shalimar Gardens, Farah Baksh, and Faiz Baksh. The garden is regarded as the pinnacle of Mughal horticulture. The park is open to the public and is referred to as the “Crown of Srinagar”.
Jahangir and his wife Noor Jahan were so enamored by Kashmir that they moved to Srinagar from Delhi and Shalimar Garden became their summer home. The layout of the garden is inspired by the Persian Garden landscaping style. Shalimar Bagh is linked to the Dal Lake through a canal. The garden is particularly beautiful during the autumn and spring seasons due to the changing leaf colors of the Chinar trees.
Shalimar Bagh stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir. A combination of symmetrical terrace gardens, Persian motifs, beautiful fountains, and vibrant flowers makes Shalimar Bagh a timeless beauty. The water flowing amidst the verdant gardens adds to the charm of the garden. Watching the beautifully curated garden overlooking the majestic Pir Panjal mountain range is a sight to behold.
If you are planning a trip to Kashmir, make sure to add Shalimar Bagh to your itinerary. But make a note to visit the garden when it is in full bloom for the best experience.
