Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons, so the best time to visit varies depending on the region. If you’re visiting the west and south coasts (including Colombo, Galle, and Bentota), December to March is ideal. For the central highlands (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, and Horton Plains), the period from December to April is best. The east coast is great from May to September.
How can I get to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage?
Pinnawala is about 90 km from Colombo and 40 km from Kandy. You can reach it by car, taxi, or bus. If you prefer trains, you can take one to Kegalle and then a short tuk-tuk ride to Pinnawala. It’s a good day trip from either Colombo or Kandy.
What are the highlights of Kandy?
Kandy is famous for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a significant Buddhist site. You can also visit the Royal Botanical Gardens and catch a cultural dance show. Kandy’s bustling local markets are also a great place to sample fresh produce and unique spices.
Is Ramboda Falls easy to reach?
Yes, Ramboda Falls is located on the A5 highway, which connects Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. It’s a popular stop for tourists traveling between these two cities. Many hotels and tour operators offer guided tours to the falls, but you can also visit independently.
What can I expect in Nuwara Eliya?
Nuwara Eliya is known for its cool climate and tea plantations. You can visit tea factories to learn about the production process and enjoy a cup of fresh tea. The town also has colonial-era buildings, a beautiful golf course, and the popular Gregory Lake for a relaxing boat ride.
What should I know before visiting Horton Plains National Park?
Horton Plains is famous for its trekking routes, especially the one leading to the World’s End viewpoint. Be prepared for a moderately challenging hike of around 9 km. Start early in the morning to avoid clouds that often roll in later, obstructing views. Remember, the park is at a high altitude, so pack warm clothes.
What activities can I do in Ella?
Ella is a small town with lots of hiking opportunities, including the famous trek to Ella Rock and the shorter walk to Little Adam’s Peak. The Nine Arches Bridge, a classic photo spot, is also nearby. You can also visit Ravana Falls and relax in some of the town’s laid-back cafes.
What are the must-see attractions in Colombo?
Colombo is Sri Lanka’s bustling capital with a mix of old and new. Must-visit sites include the Gangaramaya Temple, Galle Face Green, and the National Museum. Colombo also has great shopping options, from local markets like Pettah to high-end malls like Arcade Independence Square.
How can I spend a day in Galle?
Galle is best known for its historic Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can spend hours walking around its cobblestone streets, visiting the old lighthouse, and exploring small boutiques and cafes. The fort area is also a great place to grab lunch or enjoy a sunset along the walls overlooking the sea.
What are the beach activities in Bentota?
Bentota is famous for its wide, sandy beach and water sports. You can try jet skiing, windsurfing, and banana boat rides. There are also boat safaris on the Bentota River, where you can see mangroves, monitor lizards, and bird species. Some resorts also offer spa treatments for a more relaxing experience.
What are some packing essentials for a Sri Lanka trip?
Pack light clothing for the warm coastal areas, but don’t forget a jacket for the cooler highlands like Nuwara Eliya.
