Frequently asked questions

What’s the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons, so the ideal time depends on where you want to go. For the west and south coasts (including Colombo, Bentota, and Yala National Park), the best time is from December to March. For the Cultural Triangle and the central highlands (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya), the dry season runs from May to September. It's a year-round destination, but planning based on your desired areas can ensure better weather.
What is Sigiriya known for?
Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress that rises dramatically from the surrounding plains. Built in the 5th century, it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features impressive frescoes, landscaped gardens, and ancient engineering marvels. The climb to the top is rewarding, offering panoramic views of the area and a deep dive into Sri Lankan history.
What can I expect to see at the Dambulla Cave Temples?
The Dambulla Cave Temples are a series of caves carved into a rock, filled with over 150 statues of Buddha, along with intricate murals and artwork. These caves have been a place of worship for over 2,000 years and are beautifully preserved. The climb to the temple provides some great views of the surrounding landscape, and the religious significance of the site adds depth to the visit.
Why is Kandy so significant?
Kandy is one of Sri Lanka’s most culturally important cities due to the Temple of the Tooth, which houses a relic of Buddha’s tooth. The city is also set around a picturesque lake and has a pleasant climate, making it a great place to spend a few days. Kandy’s cultural and religious significance is further celebrated in the annual Esala Perahera festival, one of the most vibrant and grand events in Sri Lanka.
What activities can I do in Nuwara Eliya?
Nuwara Eliya is renowned for its tea plantations, and visiting a tea factory is a must. You can learn about the tea-making process and sample some fresh Ceylon tea. The cool climate is ideal for outdoor activities such as visiting Horton Plains National Park, which is great for trekking. Lake Gregory is another popular spot where you can enjoy a peaceful boat ride or a walk along the shores.
What kind of wildlife can I see at Yala National Park?
Yala National Park is famous for its rich variety of wildlife, including elephants, leopards, crocodiles, and a wide array of bird species. It’s one of the best places in the world to spot leopards, though they are elusive. Jeep safaris through the park offer great opportunities to see these animals in their natural habitat.
Is Bentota good for water sports?

The Bentota River also provides a more tranquil option for river cruises or mangrove tours. The beaches here are wide and sandy, making it a great destination for both adventure and relaxation.
What can I do in Colombo?

What kind of food can I expect in Sri Lanka?

Seafood is abundant in coastal areas like Bentota and Colombo. In the central highlands, you’ll find more vegetarian options, as well as dishes influenced by the tea plantations, such as lamprais (a Dutch-inspired rice dish).
