Nestled in the breathtaking mountain ranges of the Western Ghats, the picturesque hill station of Munnar is a nature lover’s paradise. Also known as the ‘Kashmir of South India’, Munnar is known for its lush greenery, scenic landscapes, sprawling tea plantations, fog-enveloped mountains, and tranquil lakes.
Located in the southern state of Kerala, Munnar is about 5200ft above sea level and is a great travel destination with amazing weather conditions. The name Munnar is a combination of the words, “Munnu” and “Aaru”, which means “three rivers” in the local language Malayalam. This is due to its location which is the junction of Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundali rivers. The region has been inhabited by two tribal communities, namely, Malarayan and Muthuvan. Munnar is well-connected by state and national highways leading from neighbouring states, making it ideal for road trips.
Munnar is home to various wildlife sanctuaries and national parks like Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and Eravikulam National Park. These protected areas have endangered species as well as animals endemic to the region such as Nilgiri Thar, the gaur, grizzled giant squirrel, Nilgiri wood-pigeon, and more. Munnar is also an abode of the Neelakurinji flowers which bloom once every twelve years.
If you’re looking to indulge in adventure sports, Munnar has some super cool options like kayaking, roller coaster zip lining, speed boating, and so much more to offer. So whether you are looking for that rush of adrenaline or a calming vacation amidst nature, Munnar is an ideal place for both.
