Overview

    Wildlife Sanctuaries are a safe haven to wild and endangered species and the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a wonderful example of that. Located 18 km north of Marayoor on State Highway 17, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is one among the 18 wildlife sanctuaries part of the protected areas of Kerala. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is surrounded by other famous wildlife sanctuaries such as the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and the Kodaikanal Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to various wild animals such as Nilgiri Thar, grizzled giant squirrel, Nilgiri langur, gaur, Indian elephant, and Indian Star Tortoise. The famous Neelakurinji flowers which bloom once every 12 years can also be seen here. There are over 200 species of birds in the wildlife sanctuary, making it a great place for bird watching. It is also well-known for housing over a 100 species of colorful butterflies.
