The impressive engineering marvel, Bhadra Dam, is situated near Lakkavalli village in the district of Chikmagalur in Karnataka. The dam is constructed across the Bhadra River, which is a tributary of the river Tungabhadra, and serves the purpose of irrigation, water supply, and power generation in the region. It is well-liked among nature enthusiasts & vacationers on account of its calm surroundings.The Bhadra Dam reservoir was built in 1965, with a height of around 59.13 metres and 1,708 metres in length. The reservoir with a storage capacity of 2.41 billion cubic metres supports agricultural activities across the districts of Chikmagalur and Davanagere as a reliable water source for irrigation. Thereby it has considerably increased the agricultural productivity in the region, thus favouring the cultivation of crops like paddy, sugarcane and various other horticultural produce.
In addition to this, the dam also accommodates a hydroelectric power plant that uses the river's current to produce electrical energy. By contributing to the local grid, the power station supports the development of the areas around it with power supply. The area is a section of the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary which is one of the few places in India harbouring tigers, leopards, elephants and as many as 223 species of birds.
