Kunzum Pass known as Kunzum la in the Tibetan language, is a high mountain pass in the eastern Kunzum Range of the Himalayas, situated at the elevation of 4551m above sea level. This pass is on the route from Gramphoo in Lahaul to Kaza and is about 122km from Manali on NH505 and 79km from Kaza. While to route from Manali is closed during the winter seasons. The National Authority of India is planning to construct structures like a tunnel under the Kunzum Pass to provide transportation in all seasons.
The Kunzum Pass is usually open from June/July to October/November, the closure of the roads depends on the weather and road repair conditions announced by Broder Roads Organisations. The thrilling part of the Kunzum pass is the fifteen hairpin loop turns that give a beautiful drone view, this road paves the way for all the riders to test their riding skills. The pass is India’s highest motorized pass and acts as the connection between the Lahual Valley and Spiti Valley. There is a holy place called the Kun Zum Mata temple at the entrance of the pass, travelers and drivers seek the blessings of goddess Kunzum Devi before traveling through this rough and challenging road route. She is considered the deity that guards and protects people from evil forces.
