The Shankaracharya Temple is a Hindu temple located on top of the Shankaracharya Hill on the Zabarwan mountain range in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Also known as the Jyeshteshwara Temple, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is situated at an elevation of 1000 feet above Kashmir’s valley floor and overlooks the picturesque city of Srinagar. It is said to be the oldest temple in Kashmir and is visited by Kashmiri Hindus during the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri, which is known as Herath in the region. The temple is visited by pilgrims during the Amarnath Yatra.
It is strongly believed by Kashmiri Hindus that the temple was visited by Adi Shankaracharya himself, thereby earning its name. Many notable Indian historical figures have visited the temple including Sri Aurobindo and Vinoba Bhave. When the Maharaja of Mysore visited Kashmir in 1925, he got light installations done at the temple and also contributed to funding the electricity for the temple.
The Shankaracharya Temple was one of the hundred monuments that was lit up to mark the administration of one billion COVID-19 vaccine doses in India in 2021. The temple was also featured in popular Bollywood movies like Mission Kashmir and Pukar. From the top of the hill, one can witness panoramic views of major landmarks like the Dal Lake, the city of Jhelum, and Hari Parbat.
