One of the most beautiful places in Gulmarg, Alpather Lake is located at the base of the Apharwat Peak. Also known as the “Frozen Lake” by the locals, it is an alpine lake, situated at an altitude of 4380 meters. The lake can only be reached via trekking and it takes about two hours from the second phase of Gulmarg’s famous Gondola ride. It is an off-beat destination in Kashmir and does not have a lot of visitors, making it a perfect place for travelers looking for serenity and tranquility.
The lake remains frozen for most of the year and looks like a winter wonderland. Trekking in the winter is relatively difficult, but is achievable with the help of a guide. The guides will help you navigate through the snow-covered trails due to their expertise and knowledge of the area. The lake offers a completely different but equally beautiful vibe during summer. The lake is no longer frozen and one can see the stunning emerald waters of the lake. The lake is surrounded by majestic mountains and lush green meadows. There are vibrant flowers across the meadow, including medicinal ones as well. Trekking is also easier during summer and the views throughout the trek, as well as the final stop, are absolutely breathtaking.
The best time to visit the lake, if you wish to witness this tranquil gem in its frozen state, is from late December to March. However, if you visit the lake from July to September, you will be welcomed to enchanting views of turquoise water, bright green pastures, and colorful wildflowers, making it look like a page out of a fairytale. So depending on your preference, choose the right time to visit Alpather Lake. But we highly recommend visiting the lake during any season, as it is stunning all throughout the year.
