Spread over 180 square kilometers, the Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve or Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in the Gulmarg region of Jammu and Kashmir. The wildlife sanctuary overlooks the breathtakingly beautiful Pir Panjal mountain range and surrounds the Gulmarg Golf Club and Gulmarg Gondola. The Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary has a temperate climate, so one can witness distinct seasonal changes in the region.
The Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve is home to a diverse variety of plants, animals, and birds. It is primarily made up of sub-alpine forests consisting of fir, birch, and pine trees. The wildlife sanctuary is carpeted by various herbaceous flowering plants such as daffodils. Apart from flowering plants, the reserve also has beneficial medicinal plants.
The Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for its wildlife. Although the Musk deer is the main attraction, there are several rare animals in the sanctuary including the Himalayan brown bear, Asiatic black bear, Kashmir grey langur, Tibetan wolf, snow leopard, red fox, and many more.
As per the sanctuary’s records, there are 95 bird species belonging to different families which include the Kashmir flycatcher, the Himalayan snowcock, and the Himalayan monal. If you are planning to go bird-watching, it is best to do so in March, April, and May. This is also the time when the flowers are in full bloom, adding to the scenic beauty of the sanctuary.
