Doodhpathri is a hill station, located in the Budgam District of Jammu and Kashmir. Located at an altitude of 8,960 feet above sea level, it is located at a distance of 42 kilometers from Srinagar. The word Doodhpathri translates to “Valley of Milk”, due to the creamy white milk-like appearance of the water flowing in the rivers and streams of the valley. Doodhpathri is made up of beautiful meadows and hills with streams flowing through them, making one wonder if they have stepped into a magical land. The dense forests made up of pine trees that surround the valley solidify that feeling more and more as you spend time there. It is said that the famous Kashmiri poet and saint, Sheikh-Ul-Aalam, was searching for water in the valley to offer his prayers. When he pricked the stick to the ground, milk emerged instead of water. When the poet said that the milk can only be used for drinking, it turned into water. And this is the story behind the name of the valley.
The water flowing through the valley has a milky appearance when seen from a distance. This is also a reason for it to be called the “Valley of Milk”.
